Manchester United player ratings vs Southampton as Lisandro Martinez good and Wout Weghorst poor

March 12, 2023

Man United drew with Southampton in their final Premier League fixture for three weeks and here are how the players rated.

David de Gea

Made a fine save from Theo Walcott when he palmed his header over the crossbar and he denied Walcott a second time in the second half. 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Limited in attack once again and got caught out once by Kamaldeen Sulemana but did brilliantly to clear off his own goal line. 6

Raphael Varane

Made a big block in the first half and ended the half with a good chance where he failed to beat Gavin Bazunu. 7

Lisandro Martinez

Booked for a cynical foul on Carlos Alcaraz but, like against Crystal Palace, improved when United were reduced to 10 men. 8

Luke Shaw

United’s best attacker in the first half and he whipped in a couple of inviting crosses. Teed up Bruno Fernandes to hit the post and defended ably. 8

Casemiro

Bustled about the pitch but his tackle on Alcaraz was overzealous and invited trouble. It came when the VAR effectively recommended a red card. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Relocated to central midfield and breached the Southampton defence to play Marcus Rashford in for a great chance and his shot was tipped onto the post by Bazunu. 6

Antony

Too one-dimensional and Southampton often read Antony’s intention to cut inside and he was sacrificed for a more direct winger. 5

Jadon Sancho

Played one fine pass to Rashford, who miscontrolled. Sancho drifted to the right too often when he was supposed to play centrally. 5

Marcus Rashford

Squandered two presentable chances before Casemiro came off and he was vulnerable against Kyle Walker-Peters when Southampton attacked. Also dived. 5

Wout Weghorst

Wasted a good headed chance when it was 11 versus 11. Hooked for Scott McTominay after Casemiro was sent off. 4

Subs

Scott McTominay

Positionally disciplined. 6

Alejandro Garnacho

Had plenty of the ball but did little with it and was substituted after injury. 4

Facundo Pellistri

Had another positive impact. 6

Fred

No time to have an impact.
