Manchester United player ratings vs Newcastle as Wout Weghorst and Luke Shaw poor

April 2, 2023

David de Gea

Made a huge double save from Aleksander Isak and Joe Willock but playing out from the back led to Newcastle regaining the ball and scoring. 7

Started maybe only because Aaron Wan-Bissaka was unwell and was again uncomfortable against Allan Saint-Maximin. Dragged inside for Joe Willock’s goal. 4

Raphael Varane

Defended solidly amid Newcastle’s dominance in the first half but failed to act quickly enough to get in front of Willock. 5

Lisandro Martinez

One of the few who looked their usual selves as Newcastle created the standout first half chances and had the right mentality. 6

Luke Shaw

A ten-day break between games served as no benefit for the left-back, who was regularly targeted. A regressive afternoon. 3

Scott McTominay

Still mired in an identity crisis at club level. It was unclear if McTominay was supposed to defend or attack and he barely did either. 4

Marcel Sabitzer

The deeper of the two midfielders but Newcastle still found the gaps that Sabitzer was supposed to plug and could not. 4

Antony

Had the measure of Dan Burn but did not maximise it and his dawdling audibly exasperated the United followers. Came off on the hour. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Disconnected from the midfield and the attack all afternoon and not motivational enough from the captain against raucous opponents. 3

Marcus Rashford

Struggled to get going so much he swapped wings with Antony and had no joy against the more cumbersome Burn. Ineffectual. 3

Wout Weghorst

There are times when United players appear reluctant to give the ball to Weghorst and his dire form continued with another harmless performance. 2

Subs

Anthony Martial

Cleared one off the line and saw a shot deflected wide. 6

Jadon Sancho

Did nothing to get United going in attack. 5

Fred

Came on too late. 5

Victor Lindelof

Header went over. 5

Facundo Pellistri

Did little. 5
