The club is consistently being linked with new players already, which is understandable, given the stature of United.

The latest story comes from ESPN, who believe United are amongst the sides who could be keen on bringing in Mason Mount.

Apparently, United are ‘monitoring’ the contract situation of the 24-year-old, though they’re not alone, with Liverpool and Manchester City also doing the same.

Mount’s deal expires at the end of next season, with current talks with Chelsea stalling, sources have told ESPN.

One of the stumbling blocks is Mount’s reluctance to commit to the long-term deals that new owner Todd Boehly is placing on the table, while the player is also looking to receive a significant increase on his current £80k-a-week terms.

The impasse has United, and other clubs, on alert. Though at this point, Mount isn’t pushing for an exit.

From a United standpoint, this could be an astute piece of business. United still need more depth in that midfield area, with Mount obviously knowing the Premier League well.

He’s someone who could dip in and out of the starting line-up as and when required, though is that a role the Englishman would be happy with? We’d have to wait and see.
