David de Gea who has spent years at Old Trafford, according to Manchester United star Gary Neville, could soon find himself out of favor at the team.
The former Red Devils captain disputes Erik ten Hag’s claim that the Spanish goalkeeper is his favorite player, stating that De Gea might not be able to suit the former Ajax coach playing style.
While David de Gea has performed incredibly before the embarrassing defeat against Manchester City in their last derby match, he also struggled in their first opening matches against Brighton and Brentford.
Neville while speaking on his Sky Sports Podcast via Manchester Evening News, linked the early difficulties faced by the Spanish goalkeeper to the playing style of Erik ten Hag.
He explained that the failure of Manchester United players to play ten Hag’s possession football was the cause of their early poor results and that the Dutch was forced to deploy a counter-attack during the four-match winning streak.
However, a player like David De Gea may find his way out of the club when ten Hag goes back to his playing style because he would want him to be brilliant on the ball.
“I think he’s had to step back to go forward, but we all know where Ten Hag wants to get this United team, he wants 75% possession, players that can handle the ball, defenders can handle the ball and the goalkeeper needs to be brilliant on the ball.
“I suspect with David de Gea, his United career is going to be shortlived under Ten Hag because he’s going to be adamant that his philosophy of playing out from the back.”
