Manchester United had a good transfer window to start off the 2022/23 campaign, but there is still work to be done on the team.

Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Antony have all fitted in seamlessly into the Unitedsquad and are thriving under Erik ten Hag, so it is important that the team build on these foundations in the next window.

However, there is the issue that United are currently in a period of transition, in regard to its ownership and finances. They may not have the funds to sanction another summer of big spending so they need to find more cost-effective solutions.

With this in mind, United may need to dip into the free agents market to solve one if not multiple issues in the summer. So let’s have a look at four players in four different positions who could help:

Yann Sommer

The contract situation around David de Gea is an interesting one. United are reluctant to activate the one-year extension in his contract because his wages are too high and there are some serious question marks about whether he is the sort of goalkeeper Ten Hag wants at the back.

However, he could see his deal renegotiated due to the fact that it would save money for United. As an alternate option, however, United should consider Sommer, who is not only available on a free transfer but is closer to the style of keeper the club needs in the long term.

The only issue is that he is 34, but as a stop-gap, while United identify their next long-term keeper he could be a reasonable option.

Youssoufa Moukoko

The 18-year-old is on every top club’s radar for a free transfer this summer after refusing to sign a contract at Borussia Dortmund. The reasoning here is self-explanatory, he is one of Europe’s top talents and an incredibly mouldable forward, so United should be in for him.

Youri Tielemans

There are doubts about Youri Tielemans for a number of reasons; he is incredibly weak out of possession and can sometimes ghost through games. But on a free transfer, he is someone that United should at least consider.

If Ten Hag believes that he can get the most out of the Belgian midfielder, then at 25 (he will be 26 in summer), he presents a good long-term option who United could get some return on if he doesn’t work out.

With Raphael Varane’s injury record, the uncertainty over Harry Maguire’s form, and both defenders’ age, there will be a time soon when United need to think about bringing in a new centre-back. The issue is it is a position that United have invested in constantly over the past few years, so can they afford to spend even more next summer?

Skriniar on a free solves this. His current club Inter are currently locked in talks with the defender and want to keep him at the San Siro, but if those talks fail United should be ready to pounce.
