Two Man United players are left in the World Cup but their participants have impressed during the finals in Qatar…

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insists the club is prepared for the challenge of mentally managing players who return from the World Cup.

England trio Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, Portugal duo Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Brazilians Casemiro, Fred and Antony all suffered deflating eliminations at the quarter-final stage last week.

Portugal and Brazil were favourites to progress but Morocco became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 defeat of Portugal and Croatia overcame Brazil on a penalty shootout after scoring a 117th-minute equaliser.

Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez and France centre-back Raphael Varane are the only Unitedrepresentatives remaining in Qatar.

United are understood to have encountered issues with lifting the four England players from the mental low of the European Championship final penalty shootout defeat by Italy last year. Maguire and Shaw started in England’s first final since the 1966 World Cup while Rashford and Jadon Sancho failed to convert penalties in the shootout and were racially abused online.

We are prepared for every situation,” Ten Hag stressed. “Players have success, if they don’t have success, so there will be some who are really happy and some will come back really disappointed and something can be in between. Maybe when you’re playing the final but lose, you’re going to first be really disappointed. But if you see it after you see we had a great World Cup.

“What I see until now, I’m really happy with the performance of our players, they are really in good shape. We talked already about Casemiro but you see Bruno, great World Cup until now.

Diogo, in two games, did really well. If I see the English, all three are performing magnificently. Rapha Varane is back, is doing well. So I’m really happy with the performances of all our players.”

Ten Hag is also believed to have been impressed by Martinez’s form for Argentina and jokingly messaged him ahead of their fractious quarter-final with the Netherlands that he would see him on Monday. Alas, Argentina won 4-3 on penalties
