Bruno Fernandes will miss Manchester United’s Carabao Cup fixture vs Charlton..

Man United manager Erik ten Hag will have to make do without architect-in-chief Bruno Fernandes against Charlton Athletic..

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes will miss Manchester United’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford on Tuesday night through suspension.

The 28-year-old, who has scored one goal in the competition so far this season, will miss the visit of the League One Addicks after collecting his second booking of the Reds’ Carabao Cup campaign in the last round against Burnley. He was cautioned in the latter stages of 2-0 win over the Championship table-toppers for an 89th minute foul on defender Connor Roberts.

Since the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign, domestic bookings have only counted for that specific competition. If a player picks up a booking in back-to-back Carabao Cup fixtures, they miss the next tie. However, all yellow cards accumulated are erased following the conclusion of the quarter-final stage, meaning no member of Ten Hag’s squad will miss the semi-finals, should they get the better of Charlton, because of collecting too many bookings.

Fernandes has already served a one-game ban in the Premier League this season for collecting five bookings, meaning he was forced to sit-out the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park back in November..

His absence against Charlton, though Ten Hag is expected to make changes to manage his players’ workload ahead of a busy period in the league, starting with Saturday’s derby against Manchester City, means United will be light on options in the attacking-midfield position. Donny van de Beek, who is often recognised as Fernandes’ back-up option, is currently sidelined through injury after being forced off in last Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag, therefore, has a difficult decision to make on who could slot into the No.10 berth. Christian Eriksen, though he could also be rested, and youngster Zidane Iqbal are among the leading contenders..
